There are many weight loss programs that work successfully for the majority of people.  Certainly, Weight Watchers, Nutri System and Jenny Craig all have proven results for many years.  Locally, there are as many smaller companies, as there are engraved river stones out there.  The trick is not so much about can you lose weight, as it is about keeping the weight off.  Any strategy that is only temporary leads to yo-yo dieting which is to be avoided.  Check with your doctor to get his/her advice on the right approach for you.

Suppose you want to lose 50 pounds.  Don’t think of it that way.  Just think of losing five pounds.  By reducing the salt intake alone, your body will shed a few pounds os water.  Once you lose that five pounds, be greedy.  Keep it off, and then lose another three pounds.  Now you are down eight pounds, so try to lose another three pounds.  Wow!  You already reached 20% of your goal.  Remember…success breeds success.

Any worthwhile weight loss program includes increased activity in addition to good food choices.  Make sure that you include the proper activity for you.  Again, check with your doctor to pick the right physical activity for you.

Drink plenty of water or other low calorie beverages.

Rather than coffee and cake, try a low calorie beverage and a small piece of fruit.  You will feel satisfied and the beverage will fill your tummy for a while.  Also consider hot water or herbal tea with lemon and stevia if you prefer a hot beverage.

Eat early and often.

Rather than eating large meals, have the right snacks in the house and eat them between meals.  Suppose you have breakfast around 7 AM.  Have some baby carrots and celery in the fridge and snack on them about 10 AM.  In the afternoon, snack on some fresh fruit like apples.  Still hungry?  Have another apple.  Then plan on a healthy snack after dinner, but not just before bed time.  You will never be hungry while the pounds roll off.  Consider some fiber pills along with your meals.

Watch your salt like a hawk.

Salt will not add fat, but it will add water weight and increase blood pressure.  Read labels to avoid salty prepared foods. Eliminate salt for quick weight loss.

Carry engraved river stones in your pocket to motivate and remind you.

One can’t continue the standard American diet (SAD) and expect to lose weight.  Most diet plans help us to lose weight, but we often go back to our old weight.  Here are some low cost ideas to help you to lose weight and avoid the yo-yo scenario.

  • Begin lunch and dinner with a fat free salad.  Eliminate cheese and  high fat dressing on the healthy veggies.  Consider a lemon wedge, a high quality (3 or 4 leaf) balsamic vinegar or a fat free low sodium dressing.
  • Cut back on portion size.  If you are eating out and the portion looks large, cut it in half and bring the other half home.
  • Cut way back on salt which causes the body to retain large amounts of water.
  • Cut way back on processed foods.
  • In a restaurant, tell the server how you want your foods cooked (low in fat, salt and sugar).
  • Investigate Garcinia Cambogia, a weight loss supplement recommended by Dr. Oz.
  • Go for a half hour (or longer) walk at least five times per week.
  • Eliminate high fat foods like sausages, and processed meats.

Don’t surprise a loved one with clever birthday greetings.  Instead, show how trim you look.
