Do you give Hanukkah gifts and send Hanukkah greetings to your friends and family? But how much do you really know about Hanukkah? Five facts about this festival are:

  1. In Hebrew, the word “hanukkah” means “dedication.” This holiday commemorates the re-dedication of the holy Temple in Jerusalem following the Jewish victory over the Syrian-Greeks in 165 B.C.E.
  2. After the Jews gained contol over the Temple, they purified it by burning oil in the Temple’s menorah for eight days. Although they only had enough oil for one day.  When they lit the menorah, the oil lasted for eight days.
  3. Every year the Jewish people celebrate the miracle of the Hanukkah oil by lighting a special menorah, hanukkiyah, for eight days. One candle is lit for each night of the festival.
  4. Each year, Hanukkah is celebrated on the twenty-fifth day of the Hebrew month of Kislev.
  5. Although diferent Jewish communities have their unique Hanukkah traditions. All Jews light the Hanukkah menorah, spin the dreidel and eat fried foods to celebrate.
