Will you be recognized on August 21 – National Senior Citizen Day?¬†¬†Although it is not a public holiday in the United States, it was declared to be National Senior Citizen Day in 1988 during Ronald Regan’s administration. Some people may also celebrate on August 14 as this was the date that Franklin Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act in 1935.

How is Senior Citizen Day celebrated? Some communities around the country plan events and activities to show their support for older citizens. Some businesses give discounts and special offers to seniors on this day. Other towns and cities highlight noteworthy accomplishments of their seniors. While, others create awareness about the issues and challenges that face seniors. Consider giving your favorite seniors engraved polished stones with your favorite sentiments as a token of your appreciation.

Throughout the year, many stores and organizations provide discounts to seniors such as restaurants, hotels and airlines. Also, insurance companies give discounts on auto insurance to seniors who have taken a driver safety course.
