  1. Eat less and avoid oversized portions. When eating out, eat only half and take home the other half.
  2. Reduce saturated fats replacing them with monosaturated and/or polyunsaturated fats.  Drink fat-free milk instead of whole milk.  Replace sour cream, hard cheese and cream cheese with reduced-fat or fat-free products.  Replace eggs with egg whites or egg substitute.
  3. Make half of your plate fruits and vegetables.
  4. Eat less salt. When cooking, try other spices like garlic, pepper, and basil.  Look for food labeled low-sodium or reduced-sodium. Also, hide the salt shaker.
  5. Eat less sugar. Replace soda with water at meals. Cut your sugar in half when drinking coffee and tea.  Next, try beverages unsweetened.
  6. Reduce fats.  Eat fewer desserts like cakes, cookies, pies and doughnuts.  Substitute fresh fruit and reduced fat or fat-free yogurt
  7. Make your grains whole grains.  Look for the words whole wheat and whole grains on the ingredients.  Examples are brown rice, oatmeal, whole wheat pasta, quinoa, and whole wheat cold cereal.
