Inspirational Stones

In the South, they use the term, as handy as a pocket on a shirt.  From pants pockets to cell phone pockets, to change pockets, what would y’all do without them?  They carry everything from wallets to pocket stones to cash. Women carry a purse so they have less need for pockets.  Nonetheless, I hear women complaining that men’s clothing has more pockets than women’s clothing, however that is also changing.  But pockets were not always as we know them today.

Originally, pockets were not sewed into our clothing.  They were added on and hung from our belts so we had a convenient place to put our stuff.  Later on, pockets were added on to the outside such as patch pockets are on our jeans.  As time went by, manufacturers realized that there was a need for inside pockets so that our stuff was concealed better and less subject to pickpocket thieves.  As time evolved, zippers and later Velcro was added to our pockets to make them secure.  A natural progression was the specialty pocket such as watch pockets and cell phone pockets in our duds and purses.  What would we do without them?
