One Day at a Time Inspirational Stones

Some Americans give May Day baskets to their friends and family.  This year include an inspirational paperweight with your treats and flowers.  What do you really know about May Day?

May Day is not widely celebrated in the United States because it is falsely associated with communism.  While May Day is celebrated in Russia, it is also a holiday in the UK, Spain and other countries.  Workers are honored, and they get the day off which is similar to our Labor Day.

May Day was an ancient spring festival in the Northern Hemisphere since it is an astronomical holiday.  It is a cross-quarter day which means that it falls more or less halfway between an equinox and solstice like Groundhog Day and Halloween.  In early America, May Day baskets were filled with treats and flowers and left at someone’s door. The recipient tried to identify who the giver was.   May Day celebrations also included singing and dancing.  Many of us have read about the tradition of dancing around the Maypole.

Engraved Stones Gift Bowl

I am in my senior years, and I don’t believe I have ever seen politics as raw and dirty as I have during 2016.  The issues they tend to focus on are often petty and childlike like the phrases on message stones.  The American people are hurting in their wallets and there is great concern that the terrorist tactics we see throughout the world will soon come to our shores.  The United States became the world’s greatest economic engine because of capitalism, not in spite of it.  Laws were passed over the years to restrain the powerful from abusing their power and that model worked well enough to create a strong middle class.

As we move toward the general election, I hope that the candidates stick to the real issues by explaining their methods, not their goals.  Don’t tell me what you will accomplish.  Tell me how you will get it done.  Let me evaluate if your ideas have merit or if you are just pandering to get my vote.  Let’s all act like grownups.

Happy Birthday Greeting Stone

Happy Birthday Engraved Stones

As we age, most of us become more experienced drivers and we drive more carefully. We may not have the same reflexes as we had when we were younger, but experience offsets that handicap.  Nonetheless, as we age, we also become more challenged because of the aging process, medical ailments and the medications we are required to take. Seniors receive special birthday coupons and may be lucky enough to get a personalized stone engraving.  However, most folks are unaware that there are courses offered for seniors which reduce the likelihood of an accident and therefore the likelihood that our insurance company will have to pay out for us.  That is why folks that take a driver safety course receive a discount from their insurance company.

Some courses are offered online while others use a classroom setting.  Naturally, there is a fee for the course and a certificate is awarded.  One of the most popular courses is offered by AARP.  Each state has its own rules for class length which varies from four hours up to eight hours.  The AARP course awards a certificate which is good for three years.  Discounts vary from company to company

  1. Take her to brunch. lunch or tea. Meeting with friends and family to celebrate a special occasion will be somehting to look forward to.
  2. Consider a new mobile phone or accessories for her phone. Staying in touch is most important for all of us, especially seniors. Spend some time with her to make sure she can access her email, is familiar with texting and knows how to download books.
  3. Exercising, especially walking, is important for her health and well-being. A gift card for new walking shoes or exercise clothing will be a hit. Other ideas include a gym membership, Yoga or Tai Chi classes.
  4. A tablet is another great idea. She can use it for email, internet, social media and as an e-reader. Make sure to help her set it up so it is user-friendly.
  5. An overnight bag on wheels, that she can use as a carry-on when flying or for short visits to the family, will make traveling easier.

What is Hanukkah Gelt?

Happy Chanukah Greeting Stones

Happy Hanukkah Engraved Rocks

As the seasons change, many folks start to prepare their Hanukkah greetings and gifts. Will you be giving your young children Hanukkah gelt? Today, Hanukkah gelt may mean either money or chocolate coins. How was this tradition started?

Giving Hanukkah gelt (money) to children has a long history in Jewish tradition. This custom has its roots in the 17th century Polish practice of Jews giving coins or money to their small children to give to their teachers. After a while, Hanukkah gelt was also given to the children. By the 18th century, poor yeshiva students visited the homes of rich Jewish people to receive Hanukkah coins (gelt). The custom of giving coins on Hanukkah was approved of by the rabbis because it publicized the celebration of the Festival of the Lights.

Early in the 20th century, the American chocolatiers used the Hanukkah money/coins concept to create chocolate coins or gelt. The chocolate coins were wrapped in gold and silver foil. It’s interesting that chocolate ‘geld’ is part of the St. Nicholas holiday in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. Geld is the Dutch and German word for coin.

What Are Pockets For?

Greeting Stones Gift Bowl Assortment

Gift Bowl Assortment of Engraved Stones

In the South, they have an expression...That’s as handy as a pocket on a shirt. So I began thinking…what are pockets for? It is a good question. My wife always complains because women’s clothing does not have enough pockets. Certainly, they accommodate pocket stones, pocket tissues and the like.

Women carry purses so they have a place for their cell phones, pens, note pads and credit cards. Guys can use a wallet, but if it gets like mine, it is almost the size of a baseball. Shirt pockets are great for credit card receipts, a pill holder and reminders. The modern cell phone contains so much useful information in a small space, the average guy must have a place for his phone. It’s a good thing that someone invented a cell phone holder that is attached to your belt. But what do you do if you’re off to the fitness center?  Aha! We need a pocket for our phone.

Would you buy a garment that does not have extra pockets? Why are cargo pants so popular? What do you keep in your extra pockets?

How to Start a Profitable Business

Success Motivational Stones

Success Engraved Stones

Many folks are looking for a way to earn a nice living and don’t have lots of money or experience.  They have some business experience but margins are small and eking out a living can be tough.  Here is an idea that could pay off better than trying to detail cars or to sell engraved stones.

The technical knowledge is easy to learn.  Take a tax preparation course from one of the major tax preparation companies.  Then, work for them for about two to three years learning the ropes.  They will correct your mistakes and keep you current in the tax field.  The investment will be less than a thousand dollars and you will earn while you learn.

During the off season, learn to do bookkeeping using QuickBooks software.   Community colleges are a good place to learn QuickBooks.  Three years later, you are not a CPA, but you are a professional and are respected.  Open your own business and work out of your house using inexpensive software.  As your business grows with new clients, you can rent shared office space and presto, you have a legitimate business earning as much as $100,000 per year.

2016 Final Four

Good Luck Engraved Stones

Good Luck Engraved Stones

If you are fortunate enough to have picked all for teams in the NCAA basketball tournament, you must own a good luck stone. There were so many surprises during 2016, most folks were eliminated from the final four by the end of the second round. Were you smart enough to predict that Villanova, Oklahoma, North Carolina and Syracuse would be the last teams standing? Were you able to predict that Oklahoma and Syracuse would lose in the semis?

So this Blog was written on Sunday, April 3, before the national champion is crowned. Both the Tar Heels and the Orange have played so well, it is difficult to predict the winner. Carolina is a 1.5 point favorite which means that Vegas is also unsure of the winner. It could come down to foul shooting and officiating. I don’t know who the winner will be, but my heart is with the underdog, Villanova.

How To Lose Weight

You're A Winner Motivational Stone

Engraved Inspirational Paperweight

There are many weight loss programs that work successfully for the majority of people.  Certainly, Weight Watchers, Nutri System and Jenny Craig all have proven results for many years.  Locally, there are as many smaller companies, as there are engraved river stones out there.  The trick is not so much about can you lose weight, as it is about keeping the weight off.  Any strategy that is only temporary leads to yo-yo dieting which is to be avoided.  Check with your doctor to get his/her advice on the right approach for you.

Suppose you want to lose 50 pounds.  Don’t think of it that way.  Just think of losing five pounds.  By reducing the salt intake alone, your body will shed a few pounds os water.  Once you lose that five pounds, be greedy.  Keep it off, and then lose another three pounds.  Now you are down eight pounds, so try to lose another three pounds.  Wow!  You already reached 20% of your goal.  Remember…success breeds success.

Any worthwhile weight loss program includes increased activity in addition to good food choices.  Make sure that you include the proper activity for you.  Again, check with your doctor to pick the right physical activity for you.

What A Shot Engraved Stones

Inspirational Engraved Stones

Do you believe in lucky charms? Believe it or not, they may actually work. According to a German study, those with lucky charms performed better at computer memory games. What about athletes? How many ball players wear their lucky underwear, carry their pocket-size engraved rocks or perform quirky warm-up routines before the game?

According to the researcher in the study described above, “Superstition increases people’s confidence.” How can increased confidence translate into improved performance?

⦁ To achieve your goal, you must believe that you can do it. Whether you’re interviewing for a job, shooting baskets or solving a math equation, you have to think positively and believe you can attain your goal.
⦁ If your lucky charm gives you more confidence, you will worker harder and longer to be successful.
⦁ Success breeds success. Once you achieve your goal, you will aim higher and set higher goals for yourself.  Believe, Achieve, Suceed
