What Is Good Customer Service?

Success Engraved Stones

There are all kinds of companies that pride themselves on customer service.  Some sell products while others sell services.  Each sales representative will tell you that their company is different because of their customer service.  It doesn’t take motivational paperweights to be salient.   Exactly what is good customer service?

Good service begins with the ability to easily connect with a live person when you call with a problem.  It is okay to sort calls by category such as billing, tech support or placing an order before you can speak with someone.  Small companies, like local plumbers, might have to return your call because they do not have an office staff.  Good companies call back within an hour.  Poor companies return your call whenever it is convenient for them.

Good customer service means that when they make a promise, they honor it.  Great companies surprise you by beating their promise.  As an example, if I promise to have something delivered by Friday and it arrives on Thursday, you are impressed.  Great companies respect you, your time and your business.  Poor companies argue with you as though you are the problem.  Next time someone says we have great customer service, ask how they come to that conclusion.

FREE Engraved Christmas Stone

FREE Engraved Christmas Stone

The holidays are a busy and anxious time for most of us. Reduce your stress by starting your holiday shopping very early, like the day after Christmas, for the next holiday season. These tips will help:

1. Buy your Christmas and Chanukah greetings right after the holidays. Greeting cards go on sale the day after Christmas.
2. Take advantage of clearance sales which take place at the end of each season especially end-of-winter sales.
3. Ask for a gift receipt for expensive purchases. That way the recipient may exchange or return the gift easily.
4. Consider making a donation in his/her name to a special charity.
5. For those hard-to-shop for people, consider a gift card. Perhaps a gift card to a mall, movies or restaurant is a good choices for many.
6. When buying clothing for children, buy a size larger. If the garment is too large, they will grow into it, but if it is too small it’s useless.
7. Buy some extra gifts when they are on sale. Always be prepared since you never know when you’ll need a gift.

2016 Baseball Season

Engraved Inspirational Stones

The 2016 MLB season will start in just a few days. Baseball is still our national past time. The pitchers and catchers are loose now and the position players are in the swing (no pun intended). We often watch the games on TV and sometimes in the ball park. On March 17, I attended a grapefruit league season game between the Marlins and the Mets. Jacob deGrom was pitching for the Mets that day. His pitches looked like tiny marbles or engraved polished stones whizzing by.

Our seats were in the 5th row along the right field foul line. We were looking directly at the bullpen home plate. The warm ups were coming in at about 100 miles per hour, except for the sinkers which dropped without warning. This is about as close as I have ever been to understanding how quickly a batter must decide to swing at a pitch. It is almost unfair. If you are ever in Florida during March, get good seats so you can experience what I did.

How to Be a Better Bowler

What A Shot Engraved Stones

What a Shot Engraved Stones

It takes practice and consistency to become a good bowler. Try not to become frustrated and ask for feedback from a good bowler. Eventually you can become a successful bowler. Wouldn’t you like one those special motivational stones that say What a Shot.

  1. Make sure you have a bowling ball that’s comfortable for you. You should be able to lift it comfortably, but it shouldn’t be too light. The holes should be a good fit for your fingers. They should fit firmly in the holes, but not stick when they come out.
  2. Invest in your own bowling shoes so they fit right, and you are comfortable when bowling.
  3. Place your fingers in the holes and support the weight of the ball with your other hand. Knees are slightly bent. Hold the ball somewhere between your stomach and chest, and it should be out to the side of your body. Keep your wrist strong and keep your arm close to your body. Swing your arm back and forth like a pendulum as you release the ball.

Need Allergy Relief When Pollen Counts Are High?

Feel Good Inspirational Stones

If you suffer from allergies, develop an allergy survival plan and follow it before and during the allergy season. Your personalized stone etching will serve as a reminder. Here are 5 tips:

  1. The best way to relieve allergy symptoms is to practice prevention by taking allergy medications on a regular basis before the high pollen season starts. Speak to your doctor for suggestions regarding anti-histamines, nose drops and eye drops.
  2. Stay indoors whenever possible. Try to keep outside activities to a minimum. When going outside, wear sunglasses to prevent the pollen from getting into your eyes.
  3. Try not to touch your eyes if they’re itchy or running so you don’t get more pollen or germs in your eyes. Dab them with a clean tissue instead of touching them with your hands. Cool eye compresses will help, too.
  4. Shower or bathe before you go to sleep. This will prevent pollen on your head or body from getting on your sheets or pillow.
  5. Keep your windows closed if possible during the high pollen season. Use air conditioning which cools the air. Electronic air filters will help clean the air.

Ideas for Customers Gifts

Thank You Engraved Stone

Thank You Engraved Stones

Finding the right gift for your customers can be a challenge. The gift should be about them not you. For example, personalized corporate gifts with your logo do not show great thought on your part. Your gift should show your appreciation for their business and express your thanks.  Some suggestions are:

  1. A Book – The book must be relevant for the recipient. The choice of book should be connected with a hobby or interest of your customer.  A few handwritten words of thanks may be written on the inside cover to personalize your gift.
  2. A Gift Basket – A gift basket that is put together with the recipient in mind is a great idea. Think about their interests, likes, stage of life and goals. Choosing gifts based on their personality characteristics and professional challenges will make them smile.
  3. An Impulsive Gift – Everyone loves to receive unexpected gifts that are not for a particular holiday or occasion. For example, the owner of a coffee shop, gives each customer a cookie on a particular day to say thank you for your business.

Why Give Clients Gifts?

Thank You Engraved Stone

Thank You Engraved Stones

Why wait until the holidays to send gifts to your clients? It’s appropriate to give gifts to the people who are important to your company. However, keep these tips in mind:

1. Send something small to all your clients once a year. Gifts, especially engraved business gifts, will help cement your relationships with your clients.
2. If possible, try to tailor gifts to each individual client. For example, if your client is a football fan, tickets to see his/her favorite team would be a great idea.
3. Avoid cheap, promotiional items like pens or notepads with your company logo. A box of chocolates or a bottle of wine with a handwritten note would be a better idea.
4. Many businessess avoid Christmas gifts since some clients may not celebrate Christmas. Thanksgiving and New Year’s gifts may be a better choice.
5. Some companies give a charitable contribution in the name of their client. Your client will be happy to be recognized and your company will be helping. A contribution to your client’s favorite charity is especially meaningful.

Engraving Techniques

Love Greeting Stone

Engraved Love Stone

Most everyone loves engraved and personalized items, especially jewelry. Metal engraving can easily be done either by an electric cutter or by use of lasers.  Lasers are the preferred method with many engravers because it is easier to set up and most precious metals are soft and lend themselves to the shallow cuts of a laser.  Stone engraving is quite different.

Stone is a very hard material and is resistant to metal cutting devices.  Sandblasting is a common method of cutting into polished stone.  In the early years, chisels were used to cut into the stone, however the process was slow and tedious.  Today, most head and foot stones are cut using a sandblasting technique. Costs are reasonable because the process is not time consuming.  Afterwards, the stones are carefully polished and smoothed to make the engraving look perfect.  Google stone engraving for examples of the tools used.
