Is Fish a Healthy Food?

Feel Good Inspirational Stones

I used to be a meat and potatoes guy. but I learned early that fish is a brain food.  Eat more fish if you want to be healthy.  But is that right?  Recently, Prevention magazine published an article on fish.  Following is a brief summary of that article.

Over the years, certain species of fish became outright dangerous.  This blog identifies which they are and why.

Imported Catfish often comes from Vietnam where antibiotics banned in the U.S. are widespread.

Caviar (fish eggs) can be threatened by an increase in dam building that pollutes the water in which they live.  You could be consuming that pollution.

American Eel (yellow or silver eel) is often used in sushi dishes and can be contaminated with PCBs and mercury.

Imported Shrimp is frequently subject to numerous contaminants, antibiotics, residues from chemicals used to clean pens, filth like mouse hair, rat hair, and pieces of insects.  E Coli has also been detected.  And don’t send shrimp with your Chanukah greetings.  Shrimp is not kosher.

There are more fish problems. Pick up a copy of Prevention for the full story.

Aquamarine Birthstones

Merry Christmas Engraved Stones

The aquamarine is the birthstone for the month of March.  It is a semi-precious stone and has a light aqua color.  It has been admired for its beauty for thousands of years and is frequently set with diamonds.  The world’s largest aquamarine gem, Dom Pedro, joined the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History.   This 10,363-carat Dom Pedro, the world’s largest cut aquamarine, weighs 26 kg and was cut in Idar-Oberstein/Germany in 1992 by the gemstone designer Bernd Munsteiner.  It is the largest aquamarine ever to have been cut.

There have been larger stones; however, they were not of gem quality.  If you were born during the month of March, or if you know someone special who was, consider an aquamarine necklace and matching earrings as a gift.  This combo is both affordable and beautiful.  One carat stones set in beautiful white gold will look super and still not break the budget.  Consider this blog as messages of encouragement to get them for the holidays or for a special birthday celebration.

The Florida Cold Front

Inspirational Engraved Stones

Having lived in the northeast most of my life, I have experienced many nor’easters, hurricanes and blizzards.  We moved to southern Florida during the early part of the 21st century and experience cold weather on occasions.  Most of the winter is pleasant temperatures although it can get windy.

Every few weeks, they talk about the cold front coming through.  A cold front occurs when the late night temperatures get into the 60s.  You see folks dress in warm clothing because the daytime temperatures are only in the low 70s.  At the same time, you see some folks in shorts and have very pale skin.  They are obviously not native Floridians.

And then, every so often, we get a real cold front when the temperatures drop into the low 30s or below at night.  I feel bad for the farmers because freezing temperatures can ruin the crops.  As for the native Floridians, welcome to the club.  Refunds should be issued for vacationers who came here to warm up while looking for sea shells and inspirational stones.

Love Greeting Stone

Engraved Love Stone

Thanksgiving Day is more than a feast.  It’s an opportunity to give thanks for our loved ones and blessings.  Engraved polished stones with words of thanks and love are a good reminder.  Also, inspirational quotes, like those below, help us show our gratitude.

John Fitzgerald Kennedy
As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.

H. U. Westermayer
The Pilgrims made seven times more graves than huts. No Americans have been more impoverished than these who, nevertheless, set aside a day of thanksgiving.

Anne Frank
I do not think of all the misery, but of the glory that remains. Go outside into the fields, nature and the sun, go out and seek happiness in yourself and in God. Think of the beauty that again and again discharges itself within and without you and be happy.

Cicero
A thankful heart is not only the greatest virtue, but the parent of all the other virtues.

4 Easy Ways for Families to Give Thanks

Inspirational Engraved Stones

Make Thanksgiving more meaningful for children.  Include family activities in your holiday celebration that help your kids give thanks for the things in their lives that they are grateful.  Some suggestions are:

  • Each person at Thanksgiving dinner takes a turn identifying one thing that he or she is thankful for. Since kids love to clink glasses, toast with apple cider after each thanks.
  • Plan a way for you to volunteer in your community.  Share this at the Thanksgiving table and ask who would be interested in joining you since it’s always more fun to volunteer together.
  • Motivational stones with inspirational words are set at each place setting.  Go around the table, with each person taking a turn, explaining what the phrase or word means to them. Then place the stones into a bowl and use as a centerpiece for your table.
  • Each person at the dinner table recites a meaningful quote of thanks and explains how these words relate to his or her life.

Famous Garnets

Friends Forever Engraved Rocks

Friend Forever Engraved Stones

If you were born during the month of January, your birthstone is the garnet. The name “garnet” stems from the Latin word “Garanatus”, or “seedlike”, (a pomegranate seed).  Both the garnet and the pomegranate are red so the fruit seeds resemble the garnet stone.

Garnets have been popular throughout history. It is said that Plato had his portrait engraved on a garnet. They are semi-precious stones and an important stone in colored jewelry. The value of a garnet depends on the color, clarity, cut and weight of the stone.  Garnets come in different colors, and fetch different prices. As an example, during 2010, ordinary red stones were worth about  $20 to $30 per carat  However, bright orange garnets (known as mandarin garnets) might cost more than $100 per carat. Dark green garnets (Russian demantoid garnets) might be in excess of $400 per carat.  Some folks, infatuated with birthstones, might give garnet rings or pins as personalized friendship gifts.

Thank You Engraved Stone

Thank You Engraved Stone

Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday. It’s all about showing your thanks for family, friends and blessings. Although the focus is not on gift giving, we may choose to show our thanks with a small token of our appreciation for our host or guests. Engraved stones with messages of thanks and inspiration are perfect for this occasion.  Engraved rocks are low-priced, keepsakes which will be saved for many years.  They are environmentally friendly greetings which are sure to make you smile. Some of my favorite Greeting Stones are:

Friends Forever – Maintain and encourage friendships with this powerful sentiment for your close friends.

One Day At a Time – Encourage your loved ones to live in the present when facing serious challenges and hard times.

You’re A Winner – Acknowledge accomplishments and provide encouragement.

Thank You – Thank your host for inviting you for Thanksgiving dinner. Write your own words on the back of the stone with a fine-point marking pen.

Famous Amethysts

I Love Grandma Engraved Stones

The February birthstone is the amethyst which ranges from a violet color to a deep purple.  Royalty often used amethyst stones in their jewelry because of the added beauty it brought to the piece. You will find amethysts in the English crown jewels.  During the Greek era, people were fond of the gem because they believed that it helped to avoid drunkenness.  They used amethysts in making drinking vessels because they believed it would help to avoid intoxication.

In addition to jewelry, amethysts were sometimes used to create a personalized stone etching.  As an example Alexander the Great had his profile etched on a beautiful flat piece of amethyst.  This gem is actually a part of the quartz family and is soft enough to be easily cut or engraved. The stone is found in geodes.  When cut open, a large mass of this semi-precious gem will be seen. Selectively, the best parts are used for jewelry.
