Why I Missed The Meeting

  • I forgot about daylight savings time.
  • Tuesday?  Oh I thought the meeting was on Wednesday.
  • My watch battery must have run down.
  • My GPS sent me the wrong way (now that’s for real).

Why You didn’t Get Paid

  • I don’t get paid till the first of the month.
  • I must have put your check in the wrong envelope.
  • I was about to pay you when I was rushed to the hospital.
  • You put a bad zip code on my bill.  It just arrived yesterday.

  • I gave at the office.
  • I’m all out of checks.
  • They don’t rank high enough on Charity Navigator.

Something Is Missing

  • The dog must have eaten it.
  • The cat must have eaten it.
  • I think the cleaning lady must have thrown it out by accident.

  • I am really sorry.  Please accept this inspirational paperweight as a token of my appreciation for your positive perspective.
  • Let me make it up to you.  How can I make things right?

The Kensington Stone

Leave No Stone Unturned Motivational Paperweight

Engraved stones reveal secrets about our past to those who are listening. The Kensington Runestone is a large stone discovered in Kensington Minnesota in 1898 by Edward or Olof Ohman.  Its engraved runes may have been carved by Vikings. It is 31 inches tall, 16 inches wide, six inches thick and it weighs 202 pounds.

In 1907, it was translated to say,”  “8 Goths and 22 Norwegians on exploration journey from Vinland over the west. We camp by two skerries one day journey from this stone. We were and fished one day. After we came home, 10 men red with blood and tortured. Hail Virgin Mary. Save from evil. Have 10 men by the sea to look after our ship, 14 day journey from this island year 1362.”

Although there is some evidence that the Vikings were in Minnesota, many believe the Kensington Stone to be a hoax? There are some theories, but no certain proof that the Vikings were there.  Will we ever know?

How To Encourage Your Child In Sports

These tips will help your child improve his/her athletic skills and learn to enjoy sports:

  1. Go out and practice with your child at least 2 to 3 times a week.
  2. Do age-appropriate skills.  For example, your five-year old may not be ready to play hockey but  can learn to skate, play goalie or swim.
  3. When your child does something right, encourage him/her with verbal praise like “good job”.  Occastionally, it’s okay to give your chid a tangible incentive for good performance like stickers or engraved river stones.
  4. Don’t keep score.  Just focus on the positive.  For example, if playing mini-golf, only count the hole-in-ones or hole-in-twos.
  5. Watch sports with your kids whether it’s high school, college or professional.  Explain the game and your child will learn by watching.
  6. Make it fun. When your child is frustrated, bored or tired, stop the activity.
  7. Try different sports with your kid to see which he/she enjoys and is better at.

The Federal Budget Dispute

Engraved Inspirational Stones

Democrats and Republicans have had an ongoing dispute over the federal budget for many years.  The Democrats claim to be concerned about the people who have not and the middle class.  The Republicans claim to be concerned about the same things, but also about the deficit.  As of the writing of this blog (October 10, 2013) there is a stalemate in Washington with both sides waiting for the other side to blink.  It seems that the side that blinks is the loser and the other side is the winner.

In truth, given the current gridlock, there are no winners, only losers.  Each party contributes to the problem and we, the folks are at risk of losing our lifestyles as we know it.  It seems to me that the side that blinks is not the loser, but the winner because that is the party that places us, the folks,  above their political party and that is enough to convince me to support them in the next election.  Cross your fingers and carry some pocket stones and maybe it will happen.

Gravity – The Movie

What A Shot Engraved Stones

Motivational Greeting Stones

Certain movies were made for the big screen, not for TV watching.  Gravity is one of those movies.  There are only two characters in the movie, Sandra Bullock and George Clooney.  The scenario takes place in outer space at the International Space Station.  Without giving away too much, something happens and Bullock (Dr. Ryan Stone) and Clooney (Commander Matt Kowalski) must try to get back to Earth although the space station is damaged.

The reason you want to see this movie not only on the big screen, but in 3D, is because of the special effects.  The story is interesting, but the special effects make the movie something not to be missed.  Without question, the viewer feels like they are actually in outer space with the characters.  I don’t know how they did it, but you feel the problems associated with weightlessness.  There is lots of space debris and loose rocks (not engraved pocket stones) flying  around you.  You will enjoy the movie better if you visit the 3D theater.

During excavations near the Western Wall of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, a 2,000-year-old seal was discovered.  The find dates back to the end of the First Temple period which is more than 2,700 years ago.  The seal was discovered on the floor of an ancient building. It is made of a semi-precious stone and is engraved in Hebrew with the name of its owner, Matanyahu, which is a name similar to Israel’s Prime Minister Netanyahu. The remainder of the engraving is erased.  Personal seals made from engraved stones were used to sign letters.

The find was made near the remains of a building that dates back to the end of the First Temple period.  It was discovered below the base of an ancient drainage channel that is currently being exposed in excavations in the Jerusalem Archaeological Garden.  This building is the closest structure to the First Temple that has been found  in archaeological excavations.

Engraved Inspirational Stones

Aruba is one of the most popular islands in the Caribbean.  Whatever your interests from water sports to gambling to dining, there is something for everyone. There are many hotels in Aruba from the low rise hotels to the high rise hotels in the Palm Beach section.  Also, there are a few hotels in the downtown section.

During the last ten years, the high rise hotel area has seen the most growth.  Within a short walk, there are tons of  restaurants, bars, a movie complex and lots of shopping.  You will find everything there including a Dunkin Donuts, a bagel shop, casinos and fast food places.  In the center of the Palm Beach area are three hotels.  They are The Hyatt, the Holiday Inn and a little known timeshare resort known as the Playa Linda.  Google it.  The Playa Linda does not advertise, however their rooms are large , include kitchens and are priced lower than the rest.  It has a fabulous beach, and is in the center of it all. Walk the beach and look for shells which can be used as motivational paperweights.

Gift Certificates Are Your Money

Merry Christmas Engraved Stones

A very popular form of gifting is the gift card.  They are different than gift certificates in that cards are electronic plastic and certificates are paper.  Large retailers and banks (such as AmEx and Visa) issue cards because they are easier to control or invalidate. Small stores may still use certificates.

Gift certificates and cards may have expiration dates. The issuers do this so the liability for this money clears their accounts and does not remain on their books forever. However, in most states, it is unlawful for the issuer to confiscate the unredeemed funds for their own use. Long outstanding gift cards are now considered unclaimed property. Therefore, if you search for unclaimed property from the issuer you will find that a value still exists and can be claimed by you if it is yours. So search the web for unclaimed property at Think of it as early Christmas or Chanukah greetings. Also, be careful of Visa gift cards or others that begin to lose a percentage of their value each month after only a few months. Always read the fine print and inquire before you buy one.

New Car Buying Power

Good Luck Engraved Stones

Here are some ideas to consider when you need a new car but finances are tight.  Remember, information is power.  Here is the technique to use to get the best price and messages of encouragement.

First, consider a slightly used car.  Often, dealers have a loaner car with about three to four thousand miles on it.  They sell them before they get high miles because they can sell it for a little less than cost.  How much less?  That depends on how well you negotiate.  Second, know your numbers. Obtain a car report from Consumers Reports or elsewhere showing the dealer’s invoice and any incentives available to the dealer and the buyer.  Make sure you are flexible on brand, model, color and equipment.  Get a CARFAX report on the vehicle. Don’t negotiate from the MSRP.  Negotiate from dealer cost.  Also, remember that the dealer gets a holdback later on equal to about 2-3%.   Also, buy on the last day of the month or quarter.  The dealer gets large bonuses when they meet quotas.  Sometimes they can sell below invoice to get the bonus.  Good luck.

Should You Celebrate an Anniversary?

Inspirational Engraved Stones

Anniversaries can be joyous occasions and celebrations that you can look forward to.  Be sure to spend time with your loved one doing something special to mark the importance of your anniversary. When planning your celebration, include an engraved remembrance with a wedding anniversary inscription which will last for many years.

However, some anniversaries can be stressful causing anxiety and negative emotions.  For example, the anniverary of the death of a loved one may cause you to feel sad although its been many years since they passed.  School reunions, might be difficult for many of us.  If you were unpopular in school, you might not want to see your classmates.  If you were attractive in school and are not looking so good now, you might not want your classmates to see you.  However, we do not have to celebrate these annivesaries.  You may choose not to participate and treat the day as any other day. Remember to take One Day At a Time.
