The weather is getting warmer and the days are getting longer.  This is the perfect time of year to enjoy with your child.  It’s also a wonderful opportunity to foster  learning.  Here are some activities that  you and your child can do together and learn from.

  • Collect Dried  Flowers – Gather various flowers and blooms.  Bring them in and let them dry for a few days.  Place thin flowers like daisies between two  books for a few days.  When dry, mount  each flower on its own page in a scrap book.   Label each page and write some facts about each flower.
  • Plant Flower or Vegetable Seedling – Use small plastic cups, small milk containers or terra cotta flower pots.  They can be decorated  first.  Add some soil to each and give  your child a few seeds to plant in each.   Use a pop stick to label each plant. When they sprout, thin out each pot.  In a month or two, the plants will be ready to plant outside in the garden.   Add some engraved stones with different motivational sentiments to your  garden.
  • Go Outdoors – Go outside with your kids on a nature walk.  Try to identify the flowers, insects and/or birds.   Draw a picture and describe each in writing.  When you get home, use your notes and your computer, to identify what you saw. Record you observations in a journal.  Try to plan one nature walk each week of spring.

Enjoy spring and take advantage of the many available opportunities to help your kids learn from nature.
