Watch Out for Florida Drivers

Inspirational Greeting Stones

Inspirational Stones

As a resident of southeast Florida since 2006, I have seen it all when it comes to Florida drivers.  The problems are not restricted to older drivers.  Sometimes I think they have engraved rocks in their heads instead of logic.  Some drivers think they are the only ones on the road and can do whatever they want without regard for other drivers.  Here are some examples:

  • Drivers make right turns from the left lane
  • Drivers make left turns from the right lane
  • Rather than stop for a traffic light, they drive through the intersection on the yellow, and even make left turns on the red signal so they won’t have to stop
  • Some drivers barely slow down at a stop sign, let alone stop at a stop sign.
  • Some drivers exceed the speed limit by more than 30 MPH on limited access roads and weave in and out of traffic like they are driving in the Indy 500
  • Some drivers open their doors in cities without looking to see if a vehicle is approaching
  • Some drivers drive diagonally across lanes of traffic in mall parking lots.

When you drive in Florida, watch out for these folks.

Happy Birthday Greeting Stone

Happy Birthday Engraved Stones

As we age, most of us become more experienced drivers and we drive more carefully. We may not have the same reflexes as we had when we were younger, but experience offsets that handicap.  Nonetheless, as we age, we also become more challenged because of the aging process, medical ailments and the medications we are required to take. Seniors receive special birthday coupons and may be lucky enough to get a personalized stone engraving.  However, most folks are unaware that there are courses offered for seniors which reduce the likelihood of an accident and therefore the likelihood that our insurance company will have to pay out for us.  That is why folks that take a driver safety course receive a discount from their insurance company.

Some courses are offered online while others use a classroom setting.  Naturally, there is a fee for the course and a certificate is awarded.  One of the most popular courses is offered by AARP.  Each state has its own rules for class length which varies from four hours up to eight hours.  The AARP course awards a certificate which is good for three years.  Discounts vary from company to company

How To Be a Safer Driver

Engraved Motivational Stones

Engraved Inspirational Stones

There are many things that contribute to automobile crashes so there are many things you can do to avoid them. Remember the old proverb to do unto others as you would have them do unto you. That means be more helpful and less aggressive. Suppose you are driving in the right lane and the car in the middle lane signals that it wants to move in front of you. Why not reduce your speed and let the car get in front? Wouldn’t you like it if someone else did that for you? I like that even better than engraved business gifts.

Aggressive drivers speed up to prevent you from changing lanes. Sometimes, a driver will try to force their way into a lane. That can lead not only to an accident, but to road rage as well.  Another thought is to make sure you signal when making a turn or changing lanes. Even if there is no one near you, it should be a habit. It is easy to do, and can be very important to other drivers.

Engraved Inspirational Stones

Many seniors need motivation and messages of encouragement to keep current on their driver safety skills.   Enrolling in a driver safety course is a good way to keep updated.  AARP offers a course both online and in a classroom setting. A good instructor is valuable because things change and you’ll be up to date. In addition, most insurance companies offer discounts for policy holders who have taken a recent update course.

Recently, both New York and New Jersey changed the rules for transporting children. If a child weighs less than 30 pounds or is under 3 years of age, the child must be secured in an approved rear facing child restraint system. Children under 80 pounds must be secured in an approved booster seat which is front facing. Each state has its own rules regarding child safety restraints so be sure to check out the rules for your state. Never transport a child by holding him or her in your lap. Your local police department can help you with your state rules and with the proper way to secure the seat to your car’s anchor system.

Review of 2015 Hyundai Sonata Limited

You're A Winner Motivational Stone

Engraved Inspirational Paperweight

Our 2015 Sonata Limited now has over six thousand miles on the car. It remembers everything short of message stones.  We got the Limited version because it has most of the new safety features available in today’s cars including the following warnings:

  • lane departure
  • blind spot
  • rear cross traffic
  • collision alert

The Limited is also equipped with adaptive cruise control, rear camera and a host of luxury features.  They include an infotainment system, driver assist, a turbocharger, self opening trunk release and rear window shades. The adaptive cruise control is great. Suppose you set it at 60 MPH.  If the car in front of you is doing 55 MPH, the Limited automatically slows to 55.  When you move to a clear left lane, it goes back to 60 by itself.  If a vehicle cuts in front of you at a much slower speed, it automatically brakes your car.  The turbocharger increases the horsepower to 245 making it safer to move into fast moving traffic. Hyundai has earned high marks for reliability and collision protection.  We love the 38 MPG it reached on highway driving.

Aggressive Drivers

Jesus Loves You Engraved Stones

Jesus Loves You Faith Stones

The day begins normally until something happens while you are driving.  Accidentally, you make a mistake irritating another driver, or another driver does something to make you angry.  Words lead to words and sometimes words lead to actions.  The next thing you know, aggressive driving leads to road rage and who knows where it goes from there.  Here is an inspirational paperweight tip to keep you safer.

Don’t be macho.  If you made a mistake, say “I’m sorry.  I apologize.”  If the other driver is blocking the left lane keeping others from passing, just forget about it.  Never escalate the incident, into something more serious.  It just isn’t worth it.  Also remember, some drivers carry a firearm in their glove box.  It can become crazy and you’ll wish it never started.  If all else fails, remember to use your cell phone to get help from the police.  Follow their instructions. That is what cell phones are for.

The Effects of Medication When Driving

Engraved Motivational Stones

Engraved Inspirational Stones

From time to time, almost all of us need medication of some type.  Also, most supplement our diets with supplements we can purchase in a health food store.  As we age, many of us add more and more maintenance medications to deal with medical conditions. The problem is that often, these pills and syrups have side effects which can affect our driving.  Here are two stones, my favorite personalized friendship gifts, to keep you safe.

Many simply take the medications as prescribed and feel better.  Do you actually read the precautions and side effects information.  They say, know before you go.  That also means you should understand just how all of the pills you take can interact with each other and how they can make us less safe as drivers.  It is important to read and highlight the side effects.  Also, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor and pharmacist.  Why fall asleep at the wheel if you can avoid it?
