Steps to Motivation and Goal Setting

Success Engraved Stones

It takes more than a few motivational paperweights to motivate and set goals for ourselves.  Here is the framework to keep in mind when approaching this worthwhile mission:

  1. Examine yourself honestly and sincerely
  2. Write down your personal values
  3. Understand the goal setting process
  4. Establish an action plan
  5. Maintain discipline
  6. Be flexible when necessary

Goals are conceptional.  They define where you would like to be.  As an example, don’t say I want more money.  Say I want a million dollars of assets within five years from today.  Or, say I want my own home within five years.

Determine if you are a follower or a leader.  Do you solve problems, or just identify them?  Remember, you can’t solve a problem if you don’t understand the cause.  For example, if you are a smoker and want to quit, you must first understand why you smoke.  It is hard to just say I will quit.  The same is true if you are obese.  One you identify the cause, it is much easier to solve the problem with self-help or professional help.

More ideas to follow.

Determining Your Personal Values

Be Happy Greeting Stones

Be Happy Engraved Stones

Sometimes it is hard to self-determine your own personal values.  You should assess yourself and feedback from others.  Inspirational stones or personal pride won’t do it alone.  Stop, look and listen.  A wise man once said that you can learn more from listening and observing than you can by talking.  Here are some thoughts to help assess those values:

Values are your most important fundamental beliefs.  They provide you with structure to guide you through your life.  As an example, if things go wrong, are you bitter about it or are you more determined than ever to overcome life’s hurdles.  What is your attitude toward others?  What moral issues are most important to you?  What do see as your obligations to your family, friends, community and those less fortunate than you?  Are you able to learn from others that you admire and respect or are you jealous of them?

You need to have a strong work ethic.  Having fun is great, but it should not be at the core of your ambitions.  Fun should be the reward for accomplishing your goals.

  • Friends Forever Engraved Rocks

    Friend Forever Engraved Stones

Old toothbrushes can be used to clean crevices and other small places where a larger brush won’t fit.

  • How do you make a multi-color crayon?  Simply take the paper off a bunch of different color crayons and melt them together into a small ball.  That will produce unexpected results when coloring with the ball.
  • When traveling, does your hotel provide free shower caps?  If so, don’t leave them.  Put one around each shoe to keep your other clothes clean.
  • If you find nice stones on the ground, pick them up.  Clean them up and write on them using a Sharpie.   Your message to a friend will make great motivational stones.
  • Save your old plastic bottles.  Wash them out and bring them to a bathtub or pool.  They make great toys if you decorate them.
  • A new type of watering can can be made from an old plastic gallon milk jug.  Just drill a half-dozen small holes in the cap and presto, you have a new watering jug.
  • If you tape some old fabric softener dryer sheets to your A/C vent, they will freshen up the room.

Social Media Risks

Engraved River Stones

Terrorists sometimes communicate with each other using social media.  Their motives are obviously to do harm to innocent people who are unable to fight back.  In the past, some in the Middle East threw rocks (including a personalized stone etching) against the police.  These days, bombs, automatic weapons, vehicles and knives are the weapons of choice with no other motive than to kill or injure others.  Suicide bombers look forward to the afterlife in the belief that somehow, they will go to heaven.

In the western world, we value life and all it offers.  However, too many of us know too little about the bad guys.  Social media is a major part of our lives and will continue to be.  Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and the others are confronted with the task of allowing freedom of speech but taking away the tools of the terrorists.  The FBI needs to work closely with the social media sites and it is the responsibility of the Congress to chime in.  What do you think?

Keeping Organized

Keeping organized takes extra work, but in the end, it saves lots of time and frustration.  Even if you are organized, you can still make mistakes, but there will be less of them.  As an example, some people give daily inscribed calendars as an engraved business gifts because they help to keep you organized even though your calendar might be on your smart phone.  It enables you to clip small things onto each day so they are easily at hand.  Others prefer to use a tickler system to accomplish the same thing.  It is a matter of personal preference.

Also, if you keep a chrono book (like a steno pad) on your desk and note things to do and contact information, when all else fails, go back to the chrono and you will likely find what you are looking for.  Keep daily and weekly to-dos on your smartphone or other electronic device so you can easily see the following week in advance and progress on large projects. Also, if you are managing a group of people, keep a notes file on each person to make annual evaluations easier.

Card Games

I Heart Grandpa Love Stones

In prior years, card games were very popular and folks played many different games and versions.  In the 21st century, poker, solitaire, bridge, gin rummy and canasta are probably the most popular games using a standard deck of cards.  Poker is the only game among the five that requires money to make it interesting.  You can enjoy the others using  an inspirational paperweight as a prize for the winners.

When I was younger, I was passionate about pinochle but I don’t see folks playing it anymore.  Teach your kids to play War, Crazy Eights, Go Fish and Steal the Bundle.  They are easy games to learn.  Hoyle’s Rules of Games is available online if you need to refresh yourself on the rules.  Other enjoyable games are Blackjack (requires betting), Casino, Hearts and Concentration.

The nice thing about card games is that you don’t need much.  A deck or two of cards will easily fit in your carry-on luggage to help you kill time on the plane or at the airport.  If you are not a card player, try it.

Be Happy Greeting Stones

Be Happy Engraved Stones

Years ago, we had lots of fun without expensive toys.  We did simple things with language and did not require message stones or computers.  Tongue twisters were fun because it was a challenge when you tried to say a tongue twister fast, ten times in a row. Here are eight twisters. Try some of these with your kids:

  • She sells sea shells by the sea shore.
  • If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers, where’s the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?
  • How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
  • A big bug bit the little beetle but the little beetle bit the big bug back.
  • Which wrist watches are Swiss wrist watches?
  • The big black bug bit a big black bear and made the big black bear bleed blood.
  • Can you imagine an imaginary menagerie manager imagining managing an imaginary menagerie?
  • What time does the wristwatch strap shop shut?

Engraved Happy Birthday River Stones

Recently, the stock price of Amazon exceeded 1000.  20 years ago, the company did not exist, but today, it is the world’s largest retailer.  People buy from Amazon for a variety of reasons.  Others do not, mostly because they prefer not to use their credit cards online, or they like to personally examine the merchandise prior to buying it.  I like it mostly because you can buy just about anything and everything in most sizes from clever birthday greetings to canned soup.

These are the other reasons I love Amazon:

  1. Honest reviews from other consumers and answers to questions about the product
  2. With Amazon Prime, your order usually arrives within two days, and sometimes on a Sunday
  3. They have a flexible return policy in case the clothing does not fit correctly
  4. Excellent customer service is a cornerstone of the company
  5. Prices are always competitive or the lowest
  6. If you use your Amazon credit card, you save an extra 3% on your order
  7. Amazon does just about everything they can to make you a loyal customer.

Leave No Stone Unturned Business Gifts

Leave No Stone Unturned Business Gifts

Fox News is the only major conservative TV station.  Their points of view are sometimes controversial, but in most cases, they report the nonpolitical news much the same as the other TV stations.  They have their dissenters as do all TV stations.  During the past months, there were some distractions at Fox News.  Sexual harassment charges at the station made the news. Important people at the station have since left including Roger Ailes, Bill O’Reilly, Megan Kelly and Gretchen Carlson.  Their replacements try hard, but are not as good as the originals.  Sensing blood in the water, left-leaning organizations jumped on the pressure by forcing advertisers to also jump ship.  Fox has been hit by everything but pocket stones to weaken them.

Personally, I watch CNN, Fox and MSNBC to get all points of view.  I may agree or disagree with the commentators, but I listen carefully and make up my own mind.  However, I disagree that opposing points of view should be removed from the air.  We are a country of free speech if it does not cause danger to others.  When there is only one opinion allowed, we are in trouble.  I think that boycotting advertisers is out of bounds.  That holds true for both the left and the right.
